3 Tips For Speeding Up Your Metabolic Rate

by weightloss on July 19, 2009

Raising your metabolic rate will help you to burn fat more quickly, and there are many simple natural methods you can use to give your metabolic rate a boost.

Raising your metabolic ratecan give a powerful boost to your weight loss plan, as your metabolic rate determines how quickly you burn fuel (from the food you eat and from stored body fat) as energy. Some people resort to diet pills and other potentially harmful measures to do this, but it’s possible to increase metabolism naturally by following these simple tips:

1. Do Some Weight Bearing Exercise
Weight training helps you to build lean muscle mass. Not only does your metabolic rate rise during and immediately after your workout, but the muscle tissue that you build is more metabolically active than fat – that is, it burns more calories even when you’re at rest. And don’t worry about looking like a bodybuilder if that’s not what you want – it’s actually hard work to bulk up like that, and you can choose a weight training regime that will help you to build muscle while staying the same size or even getting leaner.

2. Make Sure You Eat Enough and Often Enough
Many people crash diet in a misguided attempt to lose weight quickly, but this is the worst thing you can do if you want to keep the weight off. Under-eating makes your body go into starvation mode, where your metabolism slows down in an attempt to preserve body fat in the face of what your body perceives as a famine situation. So it’s important to eat enough to keep burning fat, and you can burn it even more quickly by eating four or five smaller meals throughout the day rather than just two or three large ones, as eating more often has been shown to raise metabolism too.

3. Choose The Right Foods
There are a few foods that can help to ramp up your metabolic rate a little bit, although there’s no miracle food that will enable you to overeat and still lose weight. But to get an extra edge, make sure that your diet includes protein-rich foods, spices, calcium-rich dairy products and green tea. Remember though that to lose weight you’ll still need to eat less than you burn, so it’s essential to stick with a healthy diet plan that includes nutritious foods in adequate but not excessive quantities.

If you’ll commit to following these very simple steps, you’ll help your body to burn fat more quickly and – most importantly – to keep it off permanently afterwards. After all, what’s the point of losing weight if you just enter the miserable yo yo cycle, and end up gaining it back again afterwards?
